Eric Moreno- While it can appear quite cavernous inside the Convocation Center (which is fitting as it used to be home to the biannual student body graduation ceremonies), the atmosphere is quite honestly better than anyone could expect for a team that is really without a rich tradition of winning basketball. The Salukis also did a great job turning an arena that is now almost 50 years old into an arena that is easily one of the best in the Missouri Valley Conference. That said, if you live nearby, it may be worth a visit to take in a game here, but it may not be a venue to travel very far for. The atmosphere becomes even louder and more serious when nationally ranked opponents invade Waco. Matt Fiedler-UCONN basketball has a rich heritage of success. Unfortunately, with no student presence and unappetizing concession choices, there is little to like about the arena experience besides the action on the floo. It’s not often you can say that you viewed a sporting event under a pyramid-shaped building. Attending a game at The Hump can be quite an electric experience, and I highly recommend a visit to the Humphrey Coliseum if in the area. This school is competing with schools that are much larger than they are, in arenas that are much larger than theirs. They have the facility, they have the surrounding area, and they have the solid foundation of local fan support. These compromises in design certainly show in the many issues that exist here. For the Demon Deacons’ sake, hopefully these days return. However, with ESPN and ASN showing more Big South games, this may — and should — soon change.
